MenuSpell is a free program that puts a text field into the menu bar so that you can type a short sentence or a single word and use Cocoa's spell checking functions to check its spelling. If you type (or copy in) a misspelled word then it will be underlined like in any Cocoa program and you can control click on the word to see some spelling suggestions. In order to quit it control click on the knob next to the text field and select quit from the menu. You can also make it automatically launch by selecting "Launch Automatically" from the knob's menu. Dragging the knob will resize the text field.
